Grundfos Pumps
Shields West of Fowler, Fresno
This two-story addition was completed in 1998 and consists of approximately 26,000 square feet of office space. It houses Grundfos Pumps USA (GPU), which is the sales division of the corporation. The building is composed mainly of concrete, steel and full height glass. In any building design, Patton Air Conditioning strives to design an HVAC system that is effective, energy efficient and reliable, but this building proposed an additional challenge beyond the norm. The heavy amount of glass on the exterior meant cooling load calculation would be critical. The many hard surfaces in this building meant sound control would also be a paramount issue. Adding difficulty, the architectural style of the building included much exposed structure, with very little carpet and few dropped ceilings. The task at hand was to design a superior system that was especially quiet, while maintaining the integrity of the architectural design.
Through careful coordination with the architect and other trades, Patton Air Conditioning was able to design an HVAC system that met these extreme demands. Rooftop VAV units serve each of the two floors, and are concealed behind an equipment screen. Inertia pads at the VAV units and special stiffening and insulation at the main ducts solved vibration and sound generation. A few strategically placed dropped soffits and ceilings provide space for the VAV boxes and duct runs. The result is a system that is very effective and very quiet. In fact, the system was so quiet at completion that Patton A/C was asked to make adjustments to it, for the purpose of creating air noise to counter the echoing taking place in the building because of the hard surfaces.
